Conference "Questions of Continuity in Wittgenstein's Philosophy", June 7-9, 2007

University of Southern Denmark, Odense

One of the most central questions within Wittgenstein research in the last decade or so concerns the question of continuity between his early and later thought. The current discussion has been galvanized especially by certain novel arguments for a methodological continuity in all of Wittgenstein's philosophy. Contrary to traditional conceptions of the relationship between the early and later work, this approach claims that throughout Wittgenstein’s work, philosophy is described and exercised as a therapeutic, rather than theory-building activity, this being a concern with the logic of the questions we ask. That is, Wittgenstein is engaged in investigating the forms a philosophical question can take and trying to change the way we ask and answer questions within philosophical practice. This new conception of Wittgenstein’s philosophy has proven to be important and fruitful, providing the possibility to follow different themes all the way through his writings.

Invited speakers include Jan Harald Alnes (Tromsø), Steen Brock (Århus), Alberto Emiliani (Helsinki), Juliet Floyd (Boston), Warren Goldfarb (Harvard), Logi Gunnarsson (Dortmund), Martin Gustafsson (Stockholm), Oskari Kuusela (Helsinki), Sören Stenlund (Uppsala), Thomas Wallgren (Helsinki).
